How to forget about Pain (Part I)

What is the biggest fear of a modern man? Financial crisis, war, or no cookies in a jar? No, no and no: the "children" of the 21st century are afraid of pain. And it's not about the mutation of the human body and the sharp reduction in the pain threshold - it's a matter of psychology: we got so used to comfort that the slightest pain makes us run to the drugstore and take a handful of pills. But it turns out, there are other ways to get rid of pain, for example, outsmart your own brain. In the first article we’ll describe 2 ways to do this.

1. Drink coffee (or other caffeinated drinks)

Every year, in the spring while putting off your winter clothes, we critically examine ourselves in the mirror and reluctantly admit that before the start of the beach season, it would be nice to burn several kilograms. The sagging tummy makes us lift the cellulite buttocks from the couch and go to the gym, where we pedal all day, pull dumbbells, and die right on the treadmill. And at the same time we feel fine until the next morning comes.

The body didn’t get used to such loads: the muscles are aching brutally, the back does not straighten, and the arms hang like whips. Do not rush to ask your loved ones to shoot you, because all this could be avoided if you pre-heat the body with caffeine.

How to forget about Pain: Pain is inevitable 1. Pain is inevitable

Scientists conducted an experiment: the first group of participants were given tablets with caffeine, and the dosage of one capsule was approximately two and a half cups of coffee. The second group received an alleged analgesic drug, in fact it was a placebo. Then the subjects spent the whole day in the gym, actively engaged. As a result, the scientists found that the participants in the experiment who took the caffeine tablets felt much better the next day than their colleagues, and were even ready to go back to the gym again.

It turns out that advertising does not lie: caffeinated energy can really make us superheroes who easily overcome any obstacles.

And even if the biggest physical load you have every day is keeping a computer mouse, there are good news for you, too. In another study, the experimenters asked the volunteers to work continuously at the computer for an hour and a half so that after 90 minutes their necks, shoulders, and wrists were numb. It is good that before the beginning of the experiment, the "experimental" was advised to drink coffee. It turned out that those who followed this recommendation experienced much less pain than those who did not. So do not rush to blame colleagues going out for coffee constantly perhaps they just have some pain?

2. Look at that part of the body that hurts

Remember your last trauma - maybe you twisted your leg or cut your finger. What did you feel the moment it happened? Most likely, you are possessed by a completely natural human reaction: "Damn! How painful! I'm bleeding now and I'll die!". But instead of panic, you can turn on logic: carefully examine your injuries and assess how serious they are. You can not even imagine for how much this method will muffle the pain.

How to forget about Pain: Yet tempting

2. Yet tempting

Scientists made the following test: armed with a "magic" mirror and infrared laser, they "burned" the right hands of the subjects while the “victims” looked in the mirror, but saw in it a reflection of the left, not exposed to laser exposure, hands. In other words, they felt pain, but they saw that everything was good with their limbs, and the pain subsided! A small nuance: you need to look at your injuries, the contemplation of someone else's pain does not reduce the suffering.

Scientists are still arguing whether visual perception of trauma reduces the pain threshold, but in any case, a sensible assessment of the situation is better than hysterics.
