Switch is an adept of BDSM that can change his role in sex-play. It means he may be both Dominant and Submissive, Top and Bottom.

Switch can choose his role in BDSM depending on the mood or other circumstances. Probably, some partners may become so tempting that he will want to change his positioning for that case.

There are two main Switch-variants:

Distinct – these switches separate their partners into Tops and Bottoms. Afterwards, they never change their roles with ones. He will adapt to Partner A by being Top and to Partner B by being Bottom.

Indistinct – this kind may unite and change its roles capriciously. For example, one switch is Top and another is Bottom. They can change their roles in any way they want.

Similar to Top or Bottom positions, Switch may realize one’s potential in any of BDSM areas: BD, DS, or SM. Surely, it isn’t about doing both actions simultaneously. So, in most cases, there is an emphasis on a particular role. You can hear such names as “Top Switch” or “Bottom Switch”. Usually, distinct switches understand, who are they going to be Bottom with, and which partners are always Submissives.

SM, on contrary, has many indistinct switches. Sadomasochists love pain in any shape or form. Delivering is equal to receiving it for them. Due to the fact that they know what emotions and feelings their partner gets.

It is worth mentioning that many adepts of BDSM refuse to believe in term “Switch”. The majority of them is thinking about changing their roles sometimes, but it is all about fun to them. In other cases, “Switch” is a person that can’t decide what he wants in BDSM relationships. Naysayers believe that there is no way Bottom for a true Top and vice versa.

But let us remind you of compensatory – a common notion in BDSM. In this case, a newcomer joins BDSM in order to change the role of the boss in real life to a will-less Submissive in a sex-play. Inversely, a shy person who can’t say a word to his/her colleagues irl will like to be a Master to a sex partner.

The controversy surrounding “Switch”-term exists for years. There will always be naysayers who will shout about the absence of term “Switch” on every corner. However Switch is equal to Top or Bottom in BDSM.
