Bondage and Shibari, what’s the difference?

Bondage is a full or partial mobility limitation that Dominant does over his or her Submissive. It is made in order to enjoy the process of BDSM session in moral, aesthetical or sexual way.

This term may also be referred to Shibari. Although they have some things in common, there are great differences to look at. Newbies in BDSM must differentiate between them. Therefore, if you are one of them, this article will be helpful for you.

Shibari

1 Submissive’s ability to move

Submissive may be limited in moves as some of the bondages can be invisible through clothes. They may also have role of the sweet reminding of sexual play, when the Dominant orders you to go into society with breasts or hips being tied up. Some stripes can even be put on under watches.

2 Functionality

Shibari’s functionality is limitless. If to speak about the roleplay, it may be used as a punishment, reward, sexual practice or a common bondage for BDSM session. Punishment includes fixation on particular parts of the body or in some positions uncomfortable for a Submissive. As it was mentioned in a previous paragraph, it can be knotted on a person with restriction to remove it. Then the bottom may be sent to work or to a shop in order to feel a prelude for the upcoming sex and a tempting feeling of obediance.

By the way, it is used in all kinds of BDSM sessions. How you’ll use it, depends only on sexual dreams of you and your partner.

3 The level of pain

An experience top won’t deliver much pain to Submissive with shibari. It is a matter of move limitation and slight physical and moral discomfort. The shibari ropes mustn’t put pressure on veins, joints and nerve endings. It is important that Submissive could relax in knots despite any discomfort.

4 Empathy

Shibari is a slow and scrupulous process of reaching satisfaction. Each rope has to have an equal tension to provide tied person with the right feelings. So the tying unites Rigger and Bottom in a psychological way. Emotions in shibari play the most important role.

5 Concentration

Shibari provides both Rigger and a Model with an ability to concentrate on oneself and the partner. Rigger needs to be careful and check the feelings of the Bottom. Submissive must feel the rope with an entire body, follow its lead and listen to what Master says. Shibari requires durability as it is a challenge for some people to sit or stay stiff-limbed.

6 Time

Shibari is slow and requires attention to each step and knot. If you don’t want to hurt a partner more than it is needed with bad knots, it will take a half an hour or so. Probably, you’ll love these preparations and will like to continue them for more pleasure of both partners. Tie one hand and then untie it to put a knot on his/her shoulder and etc.

7 Art value

It is a very creative process. In this play the Bottom is a canvas to use ropes on. Create strict symmetry or bring to life a chaotic expressions taken from your mind. The Dominant is a master that thinks about art and the story behind these knots and ropes.

Bondage

1 Submissive’s ability to move

The bottom can’t take active part in BDSM session, because she can’t move. It is a must.

2 Functionality

Unlike shibari, bondage concentrates on fixation of a Submissive. Aesthetic aspect isn’t important here in most cases. The beauty here is all about the helplessness of the bottom. In this case the Top may get satisfaction in looking at the dominance he has over the partner.

3 The level of pain

Bondage may deliver pain to the bottom, it is in the hands of the Top. However, follow the SSC (Safe Sane Consensus) rules not to make a psychological trauma to the Bottom.

4 Empathy

BDSM is filled with emotions. Bondage is the best illustration of this thesis. However, if shibari is all about preparation and visual satisfaction, bondage has more practical way of usage. It precedes the furious and tempting actions that go next. It may be the first step for the fake rape (accepted by both partners of the play) or other sexual games.

5 Concentration

Bondage puts less emphasis on concentration than shibari does. Bondage is only a matter of fixation, the pleasure comes after it is done and the partners are prepared for upcoming steps.

6 Time

The ways you can use bondage are infinite. It can be made with materials at hand or the specialized BDSM accessories. If you have some hand-cuffs bought in a sex-shop, it won’t require much time from you, but If you want to make something special (like enchaining Submissive in a special metal construction) it will take 1 hour or more.

7 Creativity

Bondage has almost nothing to do with art. However, if there is a phantasy, there is also artistic freedom. You can always use some extravagant things instead of classic bondage.

Most newbies think about shibari as a part of bondage. They’re both, for sure, made for immobilization of a Submissive and use similar practices. However, shibari became an autonomous method in BDSM being a perfect artistic way to start a new game together.
